The purpose of this paper is to present the building blocks we have developed for defect-free growth of GaAs on silicon for tandem solar cell applications. This will be addressed from the technological point of view as well as from design, modelling and characterization perspectives. Preliminary work has allowed the identification of critical technological bottlenecks, following which solution routes have been developed as will be presented and discussed. The resulting design for a GaAs/Si tandem solar cell will then be described.. %G English %2 https://centralesupelec.hal.science/hal-02343896/document %2 https://centralesupelec.hal.science/hal-02343896/file/3BV.2.49%20Preprint.pdf %L hal-02343896 %U https://centralesupelec.hal.science/hal-02343896 %~ IRD %~ UNIV-TLSE3 %~ CNRS %~ UNIV-PSUD %~ INSA-TOULOUSE %~ CENTRALESUPELEC %~ GEEPS %~ PHEMADIC %~ INC-CNRS %~ UNIV-PARIS-SACLAY %~ UNIV-PSUD-SACLAY %~ CENTRALESUPELEC-SACLAY %~ CEMES %~ MEM %~ INSA-GROUPE %~ SORBONNE-UNIVERSITE %~ SORBONNE-UNIV %~ SU-SCIENCES %~ TEST-HALCNRS %~ SU-TI %~ GS-ENGINEERING %~ GS-PHYSIQUE %~ INSTITUT-SCIENCES-LUMIERE %~ ALLIANCE-SU %~ TOULOUSE-INP %~ UNIV-UT3 %~ UT3-INP %~ UT3-TOULOUSEINP %~ TEST2-HALCNRS %~ C2N
